Mark: Day 12 - Take Your Shoes off and Sit a Spell
This 30 Days Series will lead us to Touch the Hem of Jesus' Robe by taking a look at the Gospel of Mark.
The Word - "The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.”..." Mark 6:30-31a
A Thought - After their first mission journey without Jesus, the disciples returned and told Jesus all about their adventures. Jesus responded by telling them to get away from the crowds, the noise, and the business of it all to rest. Rest, my friends, is a biblical principle. Jesus says so! When we ignore rest, we ignore the natural rhythm of life that our Creator desires for us. Perhaps the most important times to rest are right after a major accomplishment, at the end of a season of great efforts, or right after a tremendous encounter with God.
When I come back from serving the Persecuted Church, I know that if I just land in the US and hit the ground running, I'll be horribly depressed within days. (Post-missional depression is a real thing.) BUT, if I just take a day or two, get really quiet and really still, I can let the Lord rejuvenate me. Try it for yourself. The next time you come to the end of something major, take a little time and get alone with Jesus; no work, no fancy stuff, just be still (Psalm 46:10).
A Prayer - Lord, there is so much to do. If I worked nonstop for every second of the rest of my life, I'd never get it all done. I know that it is pride that drives me to do it all. Help me to heed your direction to get away from it all and rest periodically. You created life with a rhythm. Help me keep the beat.- In the precious name of Jesus, Amen.
